Installing video surveillance in a single-family home – don’t make these mistakes!

When you decide to set up a video surveillance system in your single-family home, you expect total security. Find out whether you can ensure it for yourself and your loved ones.

Inappropriate placement of cameras

Usually, the mere presence of a video surveillance system is enough to deter potential thieves from trespassing. If not, it will record the incident and allow you to identify that person. It would seem that it would be best to mount it at a high altitude to cover a larger area, but this will result in poorer quality images. Before buying it, you should think about what areas the cameras should cover and how many you should buy. Regardless of the size of the area, you should always record the gate, driveway, garage entrance and front door.

Individually, you should consider what routes you need to take to get into the building undetected – probably the same ones a thief would choose. You should not skimp on security, so do not decide to buy one camera that will record the area between the house and the gate, but not the entrance itself. Another mistake would be to create a so-called blind spot, which is a large or strategic area that no camera can cover. You also can’t mount it, risking it falling off or damaging the wall.

Ignoring external conditions

Installing cameras is of little use if they don’t have good recording conditions. The most common mistakes include installing video surveillance systems that do not record images after dark or do it very poorly – and it is then that burglaries usually take place. So one should buy equipment that will work even in adverse conditions: very low and very high temperatures, rain, snow, hail, or during strong wind. Another problem may be reflection of sunlight in the camera and clouding or distortion of the lens. Careless installation may cause damage to the cables due to one of the reasons mentioned above, so it is best to rely on a professional.

Other common mistakes

People who want to save money decide to buy DVRs online and install them themselves. By doing so, they risk making mistakes during the installation process and receiving goods that are damaged, defective or whose components do not work together. They may also make a wrong choice of the type of camera – a night-vision one is used for darkened areas, while a narrow-angle one is designed for long distances. Therefore, it is worth looking for them in specialized stores, where the customer will be advised during the purchase and, possibly, offered installation. You can also misjudge the amount of space required on the hard drive yourself. The more cameras, the more memory is needed.

The less memory, the greater the possibility of overloading the system. It also determines how long the recording will be available to us. Another common mistake is changing passwords too seldom, so that unwanted people can get access to them. The last tip mentioned here would be to make sure that there is adequate lighting around the house so that the surveillance can really record something – unless you are only buying night vision cameras.
