How do I improve the satellite signal?

For several years commercial television has been broadcast in DVB-S2 standard. Since then, satellite TV is present in every home. Very often during excessive rainfall or strong wind the signal starts to fade, and the picture on the receiver hangs or loses frames. Is it possible to improve signal quality on your own?

4 ways to improve satellite signal

Before you call a professional to set up the antenna, it is worth to objectively look at the causes of signal deterioration.

1. Natural obstacles

One of the most common reasons for deterioration of signal quality is natural obstacles, e.g. too high treetops. If possible, it is worth to trim the protruding branches or move the antenna.

2. Bigger dish

If the dish of the antenna has a diameter of 60 cm, it is worth to replace it with a dish of 90 cm diameter, which will provide better signal quality.

3. Length and quality of the cable

The cable connecting LNB with receiver should be of good quality, with 75 Ohm implementation, with copper wire inside. It is worth to remember that the length of the cable is important. A cable 40-50 m long causes significant signal loss.

4. Proper setting of the dish

Even the largest dish will not provide good signal quality if it is incorrectly set up. To set the dish you should always call a professional who, using a meter, will direct the converter to the appropriate satellite.

What to do to improve signal quality?

The antenna installation should be made on good quality components, and the antenna should be properly set. Then the problems with the signal may occur only in bad weather conditions.

Good signal quality in bad weather helps to preserve the larger dish of the antenna. An antenna with a diameter of 90 cm is sufficient for proper DVB-S2 reception. If you wish to improve signal quality, you can mount an aerial with a diameter of 120 cm. It is essential to call a professional to set up the antenna, as it requires very high precision. Setting the antenna without a meter is impossible.

It is worth to secure the proper “F connector” on the antenna cable. Improper protection may cause moisture penetration, which will lead to a short circuit. Antenna mounting should always be performed by a professional. Improper installation of the dish may cause vibrations that make it difficult to receive the signal in stronger winds, which may cause the dish to shift for a longer period of time

Is it worth to invest in a signal amplifier?

A signal amplifier will not help in an ordinary antenna installation. A classic amplifier is mounted between the receiver (TV set) and LNB. It is useful only in the case of long distances between them, e.g: 50 m. In such a situation the signal is slightly attenuated, and the amplifier allows to compensate the losses caused by the length of the cable.
