The need to work remotely surprised not only employers, who were forced to reorganize the work of their companies, but also employees. The latter are forced to take care of good quality and security of their home network so that they can freely perform their duties from home. How to deal with it? We suggest.

What do I need to work remotely?

Preparing for remote work involves at least three issues. The first of them is to arrange a suitable place to work. The next stage of preparation will be the organization of equipment that will allow you to devote yourself smoothly and without failure to your duties. Finally – remote working is not possible without good quality Internet. What should it be like?

Speed and stability of the network

It is true that not everyone works online very intensively. In practice, however, it is so that communication in such a mode of performing duties should be reliable. Often it is also necessary to transfer large amounts of data quickly. Then we need fast network. In addition, the connection must be stable, so that at any time we have access to messengers or data stored in the cloud.

What kind of Internet is the best for home office?

Different types of Internet connections can give different benefits. A connection through a telephone connection, a radio connection or finally a fiber-optic connection – in individual cases, it may happen that the choice of any of these options is suitable in terms of someone’s requirements. As a rule, however, we recommend fiber optics for remote work. Data downloads of up to 1 Gbps and uploads of 300 Mbps will satisfy everyone. In addition, here there is no problem with interference or bad weather, which can arise, especially with a radio network.

What influences the speed of the Internet and how to improve it?

As the speed of the Internet connection we understand two speeds: downloading and uploading data. They can be affected by many factors. Among the most important are global network overloads. Pandemic times have caused the phenomenon of remote working and learning to reach an unprecedented size. So it’s no surprise that speeds are degrading. A similar problem can also arise with a home network. Too many people may be connected to a network device at any given time, resulting in slowdowns.

What else can be a problem?

In the case of a radio link, difficulties may arise due to worse weather conditions and then it will be more difficult to do something about it. However, there are also sometimes less typical problems, such as noisy Wi-Fi channels. This type of situation occurs when there is a larger number of routers working on the same channels in the area.

Pay attention to the router

Finally, it’s worth paying attention to the router itself. Planning a home network for its use in remote work, we should bet on newer models of such devices. Sometimes the operator allows to make a choice, or for a small extra charge we can do it ourselves, and then it is worth to choose those with higher throughput. It may turn out that despite higher connection speed offered by the provider, the router will be able to reach throughput of 100 Mbps at most.

It is recommended to choose such a device that has the lowest possible PING – the time for response from an external server to our device at home. It is also important that the router is properly configured – more expensive devices give much more possibilities.

What to do to improve the performance of the home network for remote work?

First of all, you should try to prevent the above-mentioned possible causes of interference. Experts also advise to use LAN instead of Wi-Fi wherever possible. We are talking here not only about computer stations, but even connecting it to other devices remaining in the network
